NADA Miami Beach Party 2011

December 7, 2011

Didn’t really party my face off. Saved my energy for the NADA art fair and a few other events but didn’t go nuts. It was really windy on the night of our party but you could’t tell that much where we were setting up the dj area – in front of a gigantic swimming pool, which does not allow for maximum dance floor action. Dancing on pool furniture seemed to be the norm. Welome to Miami!

I didn’t really think too much about who I was going to play for here as I felt as if it was a crowd I had played to a few times before. Thinking about it now, the space could have been configured better to accommodate for a better booming dance floor situation. Not sure why the Shore Club does not point it’s speakers towards the beach. Instead: they point them towards their guests and their neighbors. Absolutely no surprises this evening if you forget about the time we were totally abandoned by the hotel staff, had to throw away our guest list with almost 2,000 names on it and forced all of the exhibitors to pay for expensive drinks and possibly not get in.

Narcissister performed on a tabletop and Venus X dj’ed with the wrong equipment. Water dripped onto the turntables I was playing on then someone brought an umbrella. There is a short video statement of mine up on SPIN talking about virtual music consumption. Some decent photos up on ArtObserved and a great overview on Artforum.

Beaux Arts Ball 2011: Transport

December 6, 2011

The massive space where this event took place was designed by Cass Gilbert (one of the founders in 1881 of the Architectural League). The Brooklyn Army Terminal opened in September 1919 and was the largest military supply base in the United States through World War II. Set on 95 acres on the waterfront in Sunset Park, the complex of buildings was built using girderless steel-reinforced concrete slabs. While I was setting up I saw a lot of cops and k9′s walking around and I was told that the NYPD and CIA had offices in this amazing building.

So picture that: Architects and Dancing: Explosive Combination! How do you plan for something like this? What makes an architect shake that ass? Do you really want him/her to shake that ass? Of course: Bass sees no color on the booty. The architectural league has some great photos of the Environment by designed by Leong Leong with Jiminie Ha. This was truly an underground rave vibe by way of scale but seriously designed to last longer than 1am which I think is when we shut down. What a disappointment!

I DJ’ed with ARP (Alexis Georgopoulos) who was first suggesting strategies for how to approach this event, musically. I suggested that I have a few different paths but always have my [block party] set on hand in case we started leaving people behind. In the end, I played some pretty banging 4/4 club stompers which the architects gave us the proper permits to throw down.
