The massive space where this event took place was designed by Cass Gilbert (one of the founders in 1881 of the Architectural League). The Brooklyn Army Terminal opened in September 1919 and was the largest military supply base in the United States through World War II. Set on 95 acres on the waterfront in Sunset Park, the complex of buildings was built using girderless steel-reinforced concrete slabs. While I was setting up I saw a lot of cops and k9′s walking around and I was told that the NYPD and CIA had offices in this amazing building.
So picture that: Architects and Dancing: Explosive Combination! How do you plan for something like this? What makes an architect shake that ass? Do you really want him/her to shake that ass? Of course: Bass sees no color on the booty. The architectural league has some great photos of the Environment by designed by Leong Leong with Jiminie Ha. This was truly an underground rave vibe by way of scale but seriously designed to last longer than 1am which I think is when we shut down. What a disappointment!
I DJ’ed with ARP (Alexis Georgopoulos) who was first suggesting strategies for how to approach this event, musically. I suggested that I have a few different paths but always have my [block party] set on hand in case we started leaving people behind. In the end, I played some pretty banging 4/4 club stompers which the architects gave us the proper permits to throw down.
